Mühlbach is een historische plaats aan het begin van het Pustertal. Het dorp met ongeveer 1.000 inwoners ligt op een hoogte van 777 meter boven de zeespiegel en heeft oude muren, statige herenhuizen en fraaie gebouwen. Mühlbach is van bijzonder belang voor Gitschberg Jochtal omdat het dorp het centrum van het Almengebied is. Bovendien heeft Mühlbach al sinds 1269 marktrechten en vormde het vroeger, met de Mühlbacher Klause als douanepost, de grens tussen de graafschappen Görz en Tirol. De dorpen die behoren tot de gemeente Mühlbach zijn Meransen, Vals en Spinges. Met deze dorpen samen telt Mühlbach bijna 3000 inwoners.
