Vintl, a winter destination steeped in tradition

Vintl is an idyllic village set at 755 metres of altitude at the entrance to the Pustertal valley. The municipal area of Vintl includes the villages of Niedervintl, Obervintl, Weitental and Pfunders, with a total population of just over 3,000 inhabitants. Vintl is mainly renowned for its craftsmanship, and especially for the production of loden fabric and fine cheese. But there is more to Vintl than just skilled hands and solid traditions: the village has lots to offer to nature lovers, too. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Pfunderertal valley – one of the most unspoilt areas you can find in South Tyrol, where time seems to stand still and the Pfunders mountains invite you to explore them with charming hiking trails and welcoming rustic huts.

Winter is the perfect time to explore exciting indoor activities. In Vintl, these include exploring how typical local products are made. For example, the Lodenwelt museum is the place to visit if you want to learn how loden is made and what other garments are made from it besides the iconic loden coats. The Lodenwelt facilities also host the Oberrauch Zitt workshop, where you can purchase traditional South Tyrolean garments. Right next to Lodenwelt is the Capriz fine cheese dairy, which includes an open-view dairy facility and an interactive museum. Here you can see how goat’s cheese is made and also taste different types of cheese. If you would like to alternate cultural pursuits with outdoor experiences, the nearby area of Terenten is perfect for a day on the snow, with its manicured winter paths and tranquil surroundings.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more family-friendly destination than Vintl. Make an excursion with your children along the Elves’ trail, where you can learn exciting facts about the plants and animals in the Gitschberg Jochtal area, spot and interpret animal tracks along the way and take a closer look at the wildlife. Not far from Vintl, the Pfunders mountains offer an entire world of walks, hikes and climbs. One of the most impressive natural attractions in the area is the Vintl waterfall, which plunges 43 metres among the rocks. If you would like to learn more about local traditions and products, we recommend a visit to the Lodenwelt museum and the Capriz fine cheese dairy. This will give you a wonderful opportunity to see with your own eyes how the hard-wearing iconic fabric is made from sheep’s wool and how the milk from cows and goats becomes mouth-watering cheese.
