The Altfasstal valley is situated near Meransen, one of the sunniest locations in South Tyrol. Its quaint, romantic appeal attracts hikers and nature lovers from near and far in every season. In summer, the Altfasstal valley is a dream hiking destination offering verdant meadows studded with bright rhododendrons and gently gurgling brooks where you can refresh your feet. In winter, when the Altfasstal valley dons its thickest snow coat and the meadows and woods are shrouded in an almost reverent quietness, the surroundings become a white paradise of tranquillity and pure, crisp mountain air. Whatever the season, the Altfasstal valley always has some special experiences in store for you.

Hiking in the Altfasstal valley is a unique experience for the whole family, and not just because of the fantastic views. The numerous paths and trails that take you deep into the heart of nature also lead to welcoming Alpine huts where you can find tasty refreshments, sunny terraces and children’s playgrounds. If you fancy a leisurely walk through the valley, we recommend the Almenkneippweg, a themed path equipped with four different stations offering interesting facts about Sebastian Kneipp and his renowned therapy. The experience includes opportunities for water treading, feeling the forest soil with your feet and discovering all about the local medicinal herbs. We also have a tip for experienced hikers: a circular walk around the Altfasstal valley! This route takes about 3.5 hours, and includes some rather exposed areas which require surefootedness. If that is not enough to quench your thirst for adventure, you can climb your way up to the Seefeldspitze mountain top. A well-maintained but steep trail will lead you to the Seefeldsee lake at an altitude of 2,276 metres. From there, you can continue to the Seefeldspitze top at 2,715 metres, where you will be rewarded with a spectacular view over the entire Altfasstal valley.

And how about a hike combined with a bike tour of the Altfasstal valley? From Meransen, it is only a 2-hour, family-friendly walk to reach either the Wieserhütte hut or the Prantner Stadelhütte hut (both sit at an altitude of approx. 1,850 metres). In the summer months, you can hire a mountain bike there and ride back to Meransen. The Wieserhütte facilities also include a cheese dairy where you can taste and buy fresh Alpine cheese.

Does this sound like your cup of tea? Then don’t miss the chance to also visit the Fane Alm mountain resort in the Valsertal valley and the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alm high plateau to live fantastic mountain experiences immersed in an authentic natural landscape.
