Eight holiday destinations for a thousand emotions
The Gitschberg Jochtal holiday area includes eight localities: Meransen, Mühlbach, Weitental in the Pfunderertal valley, Rodeneck, Spinges, Terenten, Vals and Vintl. Here is an overview of each locality.
Meransen is a sought-after destination for hikers and nature lovers. This village of 950 souls radiates a homely, welcoming atmosphere. It is easily reached from Mühlbach, either by car or cable car, and it offers tranquil surroundings and fabulous panoramas.
Mühlbach is a place steeped in history. Situated at the entrance to the Pustertal valley, this village of 1,000 inhabitants has enjoyed market town status since 1269. Take a walk among ancient walls and stately manors and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere as you indulge in a spot of retail therapy, or retrace the past at the Mühlbacher Klause fortress, where the border between the counties of Gorizia and Tirol used to be.
Pfunders is a chocolate-box mountain village at the end of the Pfunderertal valley – one of South Tyrol’s most unspoilt places, as you can tell from the peacefulness and authentic charm it radiates. A short distance from Pfunders is the quaint hamlet of Weitental, part of the Vintl municipality. Weitental has only 970 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 880 metres. Immerse yourself in this unique natural landscape!
Rodeneck is a sunny village with a population of 1,200 located to the south-east of Mühlbach. It’s the perfect place for a refreshing holiday: the village itself radiate an aura of tranquillity, and the locals are hospitable and happy to tell visitors all sorts of interesting facts about South Tyrol. There is a wide choice of hiking and cycling paths here that wind through the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp, with its rolling meadows and inviting Alpine huts.
Spinges is a friendly mountain village of just under 300 inhabitants with an interesting history. Situated on a sun-drenched plateau above Mühlbach, it was put on the historical map by the battle of Spinges, which took place on 2 April 1797 and was part of the Tyrolean freedom war.
Terenten is officially the sunniest village in South Tyrol: this village of 1,800 souls enjoys the highest number of hours of sunshine in the entire region! It is located on a high plateau above the Pustertal valley, with the Pustertal Sun Road passing right through it, and offers plenty of leisure opportunities for walks and hikes, family activities and more.
The quaint little mountain village of Vals is located in the Vallertal valley and is framed to the north by the imposing Pfunders mountains, which offer a variety of hiking routes, including the paths that lead to Fane Alm – have you ever heard of it? If not, take a few seconds to find out more… you won’t regret it!
Vintl is an idyllic village of 1,700 souls that is locally renowned for its craftsmanship, in particular for the production of loden fabrics and cheese. However, Vintl has also plenty to offer to walkers and hikers, as it is located at the entrance to the Pfunderertal valley – one of South Tyrol’s most unspoilt areas.
A short distance from Pfunders is the quaint hamlet of Weitental, part of the Vintl municipality. Weitental has only 970 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 880 metres. Immerse yourself in this unique natural landscape!
