Mühlbach is a place steeped in history. Situated at the entrance to the Pustertal valley, this village of 1,000 inhabitants has enjoyed market town status since 1269. Take a walk among ancient walls and stately manors and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere as you indulge in a spot of retail therapy, or retrace the past at the Mühlbacher Klause fortress, where the border between the counties of Gorizia and Tirol used to be.

A short distance from Pfunders is the quaint hamlet of Weitental, part of the Vintl municipality. Weitental has only 970 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 880 metres. Rodeneck is a sunny village with a population of 1,200 located to the south-east of Mühlbach. It’s the perfect place for a refreshing holiday: the village itself radiate an aura of tranquillity, and the locals are hospitable and happy to tell visitors all sorts of interesting facts about South Tyrol. There is a wide choice of hiking and cycling paths here that wind through the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp, with its rolling meadows and inviting Alpine huts.

Spinges is a friendly mountain village of just under 300 inhabitants with an interesting history. Situated on a sun-drenched plateau above Mühlbach, it was put on the historical map by the battle of Spinges, which took place on 2 April 1797 and was part of the Tyrolean freedom war.

Terenten is officially the sunniest village in South Tyrol: this village of 1,800 souls enjoys the highest number of hours of sunshine in the entire region! It is located on a high plateau above the Pustertal valley, with the Pustertal Sun Road passing right through it, and offers plenty of leisure opportunities for walks and hikes, family activities and more.

Take the Nesselbahn lift to ascend comfortably to an altitude of 2,100 metres, where you can enjoy the Sun Park and the Gitschberg panoramic platform in summer, and the ski slopes in winter. During the midsummer season, you can ride the Gitschlift further up to 2,512 metres.

The Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp extends over 20 km² at an altitude of 1,500 to 2,200 metres above the Eisacktal valley. Along with the Seiser Alp, it’s one of the largest high-mountain plateaus in Europe.

Fun on the slopes for young and old

The Gitschberg Jochtal ski resort welcomes families with open arms. Here, on the sunny south-facing slopes of the Pfunders mountains, at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,500 metres, there are 25 ski pistes waiting for you, as well as 15 lift facilities. There are also two panoramic platforms offering a spectacular view of more than 500 peaks framing the horizon. The resort is renowned for being particularly child-friendly, with a host of dedicated services:

  • Kinderland in Meransen: three magic carpets, a snow tubing run, snow slides, a swing and didactic aids for learning how to ski
  • Kinderwelt at the exit of the Nesselbahn lift: a magic carpet, small practice areas and a variety of games
  • Gimmy Fun Ride: a terrain park with curves, jumps and tunnels.

The Big Five of the Gitschberg Jochtal holiday area

Are you a passionate mountaineer? If you live for that elating feeling of freedom you get when you reach the summit and see the world literally at your feet, well… we have something that will set your heart racing. Get ready to challenge the Big Five!

  • Wilde Kreuzspitze (3,132 metres): the highest peak in the Pfunders mountains. It is a six-hour hike to the top, covering nine kilometres and an elevation gain of 1,393 metres.
  • Napfspitze (2,888 metres): also known as the “Panoramic mountain” because of the spectacular view of the glaciers it offers. It can be climbed in about five hours. The hike to the summit covers a distance of nine kilometres and an elevation gain of 1,440 metres.
  • Eidechsspitze (2,740 metres): near Terenten, taking about four hours to climb. The hike covers a distance of 13 kilometres and an elevation gain of 1,316 metres.
  • Seefeldspitze (2 715 metres): a panoramic mountain soaring high above three Alpine lakes, which can be climbed with a hike of approximately four hours. To do so, you will need to tackle an elevation gain of 1,285 metres.
  • Astjoch (2,194 metres): sometimes called the “King’s throne” of the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp, because of the way it towers above the meadows. The hike to the top covers a distance of eight kilometres and an elevation gain of 463 metres, and takes about three hours to complete.
